This week in Famitsu magazine, Masahiro Sakurai addresses some comments regarding the Super Smash Bros. series. Below are some interesting quotes that Sakurai made in the magazine:
“There are too many Fire Emblem and there are too many sword characters. I agree. However, these things are already decided, so we have to continue. The things I should be thinking about are somewhere else.”
“Since there are a lot of sword characters, it’s up to me to make sure they have their own tactics that are unique to each fighter.”
Masahiro Sakurai has stated a multitude of times that he does not choose which characters go into Super Smash Bros Ultimate. That is a job that Nintendo decides. The full article (in Japanese) can be found here.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate was released December 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. The fight DLC characters are already out, with Byleth (Fire Emblem: Three Houses) being the latest fighter to be released. Fighters Pass 2 has already been announced and can be pre-ordered from the Nintendo Store. However, none of the 6 characters have been revealed as of yet.
